Let us recap: I'm trying the slow and careful approach to this dress instead of hammering it out like my normal crazy lady way. I stitched that yoke like nobodies business. Heck, my gathering was so neat and even I swear sewing angels wept as they gazed upon its sheer brilliance.
I was invincible! I mean, look at how epic this is. Unless you don't want to be blinded by awesome- in that case close your eyes and scroll down a wee bit... :P
And how the mighty fell...
As I moved on to sew the front and back shell together for the life of me it wouldn't line up. Puzzled at how the fabric had magically altered, as I could do no wrong, I pulled out my muslin and did a comparison. And that's when I found the ABOMINATION that was my upside down pieces...
Yes- that is right. In all my careful and considered piecing together my glory was to be thwarted by an upside down bodice piece. And not only once. I had done the same with the lining. Curse you upside down pieces! So it was off to the land of drinking a "martini" and unpicking fabric. If you have to do a sucky job, do it in style I say! And nothing says style like drinking pink lemonade from a martini glass and putting on a a really bad British accent... (it's generally best not to ask)
I'm choosing to look at this as an unintentional win. I got paid today so I can grab some nicer lining tomorrow afternoon and line my bodice in something softer. And maybe check out Lisette fabric as it has finally arrived.
But I'll be watching you Chantilly from the corner of my eye. Any more of that and KA POW!

Awww - how frustrating. I feel your pain as I've done this more than once.
That is the worse! I think we all have been there before.
Ladies- I can not thank you for your solidarity enough! And I was so proud of my gathers *sigh*
I've sewn things upside down many times. Only last weekend I was making a linen top with panels and had to unpick 2 of the panels and now the darn thing is way too big anyway.
Went to Spotters last night and saw the Lisette Fabric, some of the designs not bad but the ones I liked were in a heavy twill.
Love your blog by the way - very entertaining reading.
Aww I also have embarked on projects before and been so damn proud of myself until I've stepped back and actually looked at the havoc I have wreaked. Ahhh well. All part of the *fun* I suppose. Better luck next time!
Thanks, Puffenstuff! Best of luck with your linen top- I think I would be having a tanty if I unpicked, restitched and found it was too big!
And I totes here you on the Lisette fabric- I grabbed some yesterday. The twill was my fave too!
Stitchy, thanks for the support! I have new lining fabric so will be attempting again this afternoon. Fingers crossed!
Stumbled upon your blog & reading all your colette posts since I'm learning how to sew with some colette patterns. I recently made the chantilly dress, and i must say, i felt better after reading your post because i did the exact same thing: sewed the bodice upside down. i also enjoyed a glass of wine as i unpicked that thing. but in the end wasn't it worth it for that twirl?
Chantilly is a tricky beast, Cathy! But she is well worth it in the end. I do so hope you enjoyed your twirl! ;)
